Concerning Engine Noises

Any strange noise coming from your automobile is concerning. This being said, there are specific noises that the vehicle will make for specific reasons. We are going to discuss various engine and other system noises below and what causes them. You can count on us to find the problem and fix it if your car, SUV, or truck is making a strange sound.

Growling

One sound that you do not want to hear the engine make is a growling sound. This can also be construed as grinding. This noise suggests that the metal parts are wearing against each other without motor oil to lubricate them. If you continue to drive your automobile, you can damage the engine beyond repair. An engine always needs plenty of oil circulating through it.

Hissing

If the engine is hissing or squealing softly, you may have a leaking vacuum hose that needs to be replaced. In addition, the engine may also have a fluid leak. The fluid will hiss, squeal, or sizzle when it drips onto the engine parts that are extremely hot.

Humming

We mentioned in the intro that we were going to talk about other things than the engine. Let’s talk about the transmission. If you suspect that your transmission needs to be repaired, put the transmission in neutral while the vehicle is running. If it is humming, it needs repair.

Knocking

If you have ever put fuel with the wrong octane rating in the tank, you know what it’s like to have a knocking engine. This is just one reason why the engine will knock. Other reasons include worn spark plugs, a lean fuel mixture, or worn rod bearings.

Popping

Another system that can make strange noises if it is malfunctioning is the exhaust system. For example, if you have a hole in the exhaust manifold, the manifold will make a popping noise. If you have a hole in the muffler, the muffler will pop when you press down on the accelerator.

Roaring

The catalytic converter can also pop if it is clogged, but your engine will roar loudly if the converter has been stolen. If your muffler has a hole in it, the engine will also roar loudly, especially when you press down on the accelerator.

Squealing

Finally, the engine will squeal when you first fire it up if the serpentine belt is too loose. Your brakes may squeal if they are getting too hot.
