How Many Filters Does My Car Have?

Your car has three to five filters. Not every vehicle has a cabin air or transmission filter. Knowing when to change the filters in your car, truck, or utility vehicle helps keep the engine running efficiently. If you have a cabin air filter, it also helps to keep the air in the vehicle’s cabin air clean. Getz Automotive can change your filters for you; it won’t take that long. Let’s talk about the five primary disposable filters found in automobiles, when they need to be changed, and what they do.

There is an air filter in the engine designed to clean the air that comes in from the outside. Your automobile not only needs fuel to fire up and run but also air. The spark plugs ignite a combination of air and fuel in each cylinder to start engine combustion. The air filter ensures the air in the cylinders is free of contaminants. Change the air filter once a year or every 12,000 miles.

As we said above, the cabin air filter keeps the air in the passenger cabin clean and fresh. It works much like your furnace filter does in your home. It ensures that the air that flows out of the vents is free of dirt, debris, contaminants, exhaust, and allergens that can irritate you and your passengers while you are in the vehicle. Change the cabin air filter every 30,000 miles.

The fuel filter also needs to be changed every 30,000 miles. Fuel runs through this filter twice to make absolutely certain that there aren’t any contaminants or sediment in the fuel that is eventually placed in each cylinder. A clogged fuel filter can affect your engine’s performance. In fact, it can even prevent you from being able to start your car, truck, or utility vehicle.

The oil filter is changed when you get your car’s oil changed. Depending on that duration, this filter is changed every 3,000 to 10,000 miles. As oil circulates through the engine, it picks up dirt and grime from the moving parts. Consequently, the oil must be purified before it runs through the engine again. This is the primary job of the oil filter.

The transmission filter (if your vehicle has one) helps prevent dirt and contaminants from making their way into the transmission fluid. It also helps to prevent metal shavings from getting stuck in the gears. This fluid is generally changed when you have your transmission fluid changed, so every 30,000 miles.
