Is My Automatic Transmission Going Bad? Here Are Some of the Warning Signs!

Most automobiles have automatic transmissions these days because this is what drivers prefer. An automatic transmission makes driving much easier as the car, truck, or utility vehicle shifts gears for you. If your vehicle is doing any of the following, however, Getz Automotive warns that your automatic transmission might be going bad. There could be a problem with the transmission fluid or the transmission itself.

Car Won’t Go Into Gear

One of the most common signs of automatic transmission trouble is being unable to get your automobile into gear. No matter how hard you try, your vehicle will not shift from park into reverse, neutral, or drive. This is a sign of transmission failure that must be looked into right away.

Car Slips Out of Gear

You may be able to get your vehicle into gear but, as you’re driving, it will suddenly slip out of gear. When this happens, your automobile shifts into neutral and you lose power. Your transmission may go back into gear or, depending on the damage, may stay in neutral.

Gears Shifts Are Noisy

You may also hear grinding, squealing, or whining when your automobile shifts gears. This can be a sign of low transmission fluid or another problem with the automatic transmission. You shouldn’t hear your vehicle shift gears except for the changes in your engine’s RPMs.

Gear Shifts Are Rough

You may also feel your vehicle shifting gears much more roughly than normal. This usually indicates that you have low transmission fluid. The gear shifts should be smooth and, pardon the pun, fluid. Your vehicle should not jerk or lurch every time it goes from one gear to the next.

Idling Is Noisy and Rough

You might also hear and feel your vehicle idle, and this is a sign of problems with the transmission. When you are idling, your engine should remain smooth both in sound and sensation. If you notice your vehicle vibrating and you hear humming noises when the car is in neutral, you’ve got a transmission problem.

Transmission Fluid Is Leaking

Finally, if low transmission fluid is creating your transmission troubles, it could be that you have a transmission fluid leak. Sometimes you can see the leaks underneath your automobile toward the center. Other times, the leak is not visible. Either way, it must be fixed.
