Poor Power Production Can Be Caused By a Faulty Fuel Pump

Getz Automotive advises that the problems listed below are signs that your fuel pump is going bad in your automobile. Another sign that you need a new fuel pump is noises coming from the fuel tank. Don’t worry. We can test the pump and replace it if it is malfunctioning. This can usually start to happen after you have clocked 100,000 miles or more on the odometer.

Poor Engine Power Production

One of the first things you will notice is that your engine is struggling to produce power. This will be particularly noticeable when the engine is under stress or when you want to drive faster. Unfortunately, the engine needs more fuel when you are driving under these conditions. A faulty fuel pump will be unable to supply the engine with the extra fuel.

Excessive Power Production

The opposite can also occur with a malfunctioning pump. It can actually cause your engine to pick up speed in spurts because it is sending too much fuel into the combustion chamber. When this happens, driving your automobile can be difficult because you don’t know what the engine is going to do. Have your car towed to our shop.

Problems With Fuel Economy

The above issues will cause problems with your car, truck, or utility vehicle’s fuel economy because the engine will blow through the fuel more quickly. Even if it is struggling to run, it still uses more fuel. Consequently, a faulty pump can affect your gas mileage.

Problems With Fuel Pressure

It can also affect the fuel pressure in the engine. If you have a fuel pressure gauge, test the fuel pressure to see if it is below the normal range. If it is, your fuel pump needs to be replaced. If you don’t have a fuel pressure gauge, bring your vehicle to our shop so we can test the fuel pressure.

Rising Engine Temperature

Another sign that the pump is malfunctioning is rising engine temperatures when you drive your automobile. The pump uses the fuel as a coolant for its motor. If it is not drawing enough fuel to cool off its motor the motor will transfer the heat into the engine and overheat your engine.

An Engine That Will Not Start

Finally, as you can imagine, your engine will not start if it doesn’t have any fuel in the combustion chamber. This can happen if the pump dies completely.
