Top Four Reasons for an Engine Replacement in Your Car

Most people replace their engines because they don’t want to get rid of their cars. We here at Getz Automotive understand that because part of our automotive services is repairing classic cars. If you’re driving your dream car, old or new, replacing it is not an option, so you must replace the engine instead. Here are four instances where you could keep pouring money into the car, but engine replacement will save you money in the end.

1. Excess Exhaust

Too much exhaust smoke is a sign of an underlying engine problem that is the precursor to engine failure. For example, blue exhaust smoke means you’ve probably got a cracked engine block and oil is burning in the cylinders. White exhaust smoke is a sign you’ve blown the head gasket, which can cause the engine coolant to mix with the oil. Black smoke is a sign that excess fuel is burning somewhere.

2. Engine Knocks

Engine knocks can be a minor problem if you put the wrong gas in your car, but oftentimes, they are a sign of a much bigger problem. A common cause of engine knocking is worn rod bearings, which cause the pistons to bang against the crankshaft walls as they move up and down. This can cause serious engine damage, as can broken rods which will basically kill your vehicle’s engine instantly, requiring engine replacement.

3. Metal Shavings

You’ll definitely need an engine replacement if you find metal shavings in your vehicle’s motor oil. Metal shavings are basically disintegrating engine parts. If you have never been good about changing your oil, you’ve created a condition where hot engine parts scrape against each other and rub metal into the motor oil as it passes through. This can literally stop your engine in hours; a few days at the most.

4. No More Spunk

Finally, no matter how good you take care of your automobile, if you plan to keep driving it for decades, you’ll need to replace the engine eventually. The record for the miles on a diesel engine is 900,000 miles, but gasoline-powered engines are lucky if they make it to 300,000. They simply wear out, and when you start replacing entire systems, it’s probably best to just replace the whole engine.
